Hickenlooper tries to sharpen dull knife against Tancredo

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper’s commitment to run a “clean campaign” in his race for governor of Colorado may be under pressure less than two weeks before Election Day.

“A lot of people have said, if you went out and tried to point out all the problems your opponents have, you’d automatically lift yourself up,” Hickenlooper said, reported The Washington Times on Sunday in a story titled, “Colorado clean-campaign vow at risk.” “[But] appealing to fear and anger is a very short-term solution that has long-term negative consequences.”

On Monday night, at a house party for the campaign that was webcast, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee answered a question about immigration policy [see video above] and said this of Tom Tancredo, who is running on the American Constitution Party ticket…

“In my honest opinion, I don’t think Congressman Tancredo…would make a great governor,” said Hickenlooper. “Obviously I’m running because I think I can do a better job. But I do think that, you know, saying he’s going to bomb Mecca, or that he’s, you know, some of these more outrageous…He tries to be flamboyant, which is really not what the state wants. Right? If we’re gonna turn our economy around, we want predictability. We want stability in that. And, immigration is a perfect example. Right?”

The Real Clear Politics polling average has Hickenlooper up 10 points on Tancredo, who has closed a huge gap in recent weeks. See the chart below…
