Government union boss: wage cuts are “mentally retarded”

Time to stand and deliver. Republicans won the U.S. House of Representatives in November, and the public wants what was promised: at least $100 billion in spending cuts. Not too much to ask for when the country is $14 TRILLION in debt.

Fiscal hawks in Congress are demanding more of GOP leadership, reported Politico on Wednesday, because they’s not seeing the changes that were promised. And now it looks like they may get to that $100 billion target, Bloomberg News reports today.

That’s a good start. Congresspeople get to Washington D.C., and are faced with many competing agendas, including those of big, scary union toughies who say outlandish things. Case-in-point: John Gage, the president of the American Federation of Government Employees (which represents 600,000 federal workers), who said this, according to the video above, promoted by Americans for Prosperity

“When people say, ‘Well, we just have to pay less in wages, whether it’s private sector or public sector,’ I think they’re mentally retarded to say something like that.”

Some Congresspeople may get steel in their spines when they hear that. Some may go weak and worry about their election prospects in 2012 if they vote to hack the federal hog. But just remember the tens of millions of people who don’t have time to protest and advocate for themselves because THEY’RE AT WORK TO PAY THE TAXES that pay the salaries of those federal workers.

So, to those elected representatives who won office with the backing of fiscal conservatives: it’s time to step up to the promises you made on the campaign trail.

P.S. Americans for Prosperity has also launched an e-mail petition campaign to “Remove John Gage Now!” Sign up at http://RemoveGage.com
