Schrager heads to Wisconsin - and into political chaos

My friend Adam Schrager, former political reporter at 9News KUSA, left Denver a mere two weeks ago. Yet he has somehow managed to walk right into the one of the hottest political stories in the country. He left the relative sanity of Colorado for the craziness of Wisconsin, where he reports for Wisconsin Public Television.

The state is in chaos since Republican Gov. Scott Walker proposed a bill that would ask public workers to pay more for health benefits and pensions, and restrict their ability to collectively bargain for wage hikes. Democratic state senators fled the state, making it impossible to achieve a quorum and vote on legislation.

Schrager [beginning at 3:10 of the PBS NewsHour video above] said this Thursday about the governor:

“He said he’s willing to talk with anyone and yet, he said that people have to show up to work in order to be spoken to. And that was a very clear point that he made over and over again in his news conference.”

And their chances of passing anything?

“The Senate majority, the Republicans in the state Senate sent out the Sergeant at Arms to find [the missing Senators]. They need, right now, they need three-fifths of the members present to vote on any budget bill and right now in the state senate in Wisconsin and that would be twenty members. There are ninteen Republicans so they need to find one Democrat and all of the Democrats right now, we’ve been told, are out of state.”

Nice job Adam, way to walk into the middle of the craziness.
