Dem candidate for Congress in Colo. bows out amid state GOP push

Perry Haney exited his race for Congress a day after the Colorado GOP requested a Federal Election Commission (FEC) probe into his campaign, The Denver Post reported.

“The complaint states that while Haney had officially filed his candidacy with the FEC in late October 2011, he directly violated FEC regulations by running both an exploratory committee and a congressional committee simultaneously under the guise of two different groups,” according to a Colorado GOP statement on Tuesday.

“According to FEC reports, on June 6 and July 19, Haney funneled a total of $51,000 of his own money into his campaign account,” the GOP statement alleges. “Despite acting and directing money like a congressional candidate for months, Haney never filed with the FEC until two months passed.”

Haney, citing the demands of his medical practice, posted this Withdrawal Announcement on his campaign website…

“Unfortunately, my medical clinic that employs 45 people and treats many patients from the 6th District is not at a point where it can sustain operations with my full-time absence.”

The Denver Post reported that Haney said in an interview that “he’s been trying to get out of the race for weeks and that it’s not due to the GOP complaint.”

In the complaint, The Colorado GOP cited a YouTube video (above) uploaded on Aug. 31, 2011, in which the names of websites www.SendAChiropractorToCongress.com and Perry Haney for Congress appear simultaneously.

“The YouTube channel name and both websites refer to Haney as a candidate,” according to the Colorado GOP’s legal analysis. “Furthermore, the Committee’s original name, Perry Haney for Congress Exploratory Committee, also refers to Haney as a candidate. The testing the waters provision does not allow the Committee to refer to Haney as a candidate without triggering registration and reporting with the FEC.”

So ends the Haney campaign after a series of missteps. Although Haney insists he dropped out of the race to focus on his medical practice, the timing makes us wonder if the state GOP complaint didn’t contribute to the decision.
