On school choice, opponents are afraid it will succeed

By | March 22nd, 2011

Dan Krueger, who described himself as a “taxpayer who wants the wisest spending of my tax dollars,” had one of the best lines of the night at the Douglas County Board of Education meeting last week at which a school voucher program was approved.

“Those that oppose this plan for choice are not afraid that it will fail; they are afraid it will succeed,” he said.

After hours and hours of testimony, and pushback by opponents, Krueger said the one thing proponents were thinking.

Since the voucher program is being introduced in this Colorado community on such a limited scale (only 500 students will be accepted in the first phase), the hand-wringing and virulent opposition to even testing the program seems to indicate just that . . . opponents are afraid of what success could mean.
